About WJHL 11

WJHL-TV first signed on the air on October 26, 1953 as the first television station in the Tri-Cities region of Tennessee and Virginia. It was owned by Hanes Lancaster, Sr. and his son Hanes, Jr., alongside WJHL radio (910 AM, now WJCW; and FM 101.5, now WQUT). The call letters stood for John H. Lancaster, Hanes, Sr.'s father and Hanes, Jr.'s grandfather, who had founded the AM station in 1938. Hanes, Jr., who was the radio station's sales manager, was intrigued by the potential of television and worked to establish a television counterpart to WJHL radio. Despite initial skepticism from Hanes, Sr., Hanes, Jr. was able to secure the necessary investments to convince his father to take on the project.

About WKRN ABC2

WSIX-TV has been an ABC affiliate since its sign-on in 1953. It was the second television station in Nashville and was owned by WSIX, Inc., which was owned by Louis and Jack Draughon, along with WSIX radio (980 AM, now WYFN). The call letters came from the 638 Tire Company in nearby Springfield, where the Draughon brothers had started WSIX in 1930.

Initially, WSIX-TV was a CBS affiliate that shared the ABC affiliation with WSM-TV (channel 4, now WSMV). However, after WLAC-TV (channel 5, now WTVF) signed on and took the CBS affiliation due to WLAC radio's long history as a CBS radio affiliate, WSIX-TV became a full-time ABC affiliate. During the late 1950s, the station was also briefly affiliated with the NTA Film Network.

About WATN

The station, WPTY-TV, first signed on the air on September 10, 1978. It was the first station on the UHF band, the first independent station in the market, and the first new commercial station to sign on in Memphis since WREG-TV (channel 3) debuted 23 years earlier. At the time, Memphis had a population of almost 650,000 people, making it a medium-sized market due to the surrounding suburban and rural areas being similarly sized to the city itself.

WPTY-TV originally operated from studios located at 2225 Union Avenue in Memphis. The station's debut marked a significant milestone in the city, as it had a longer wait for an independent station than other cities of similar size.

About WHBQ FOX13

The station, which has consistently been affiliated with Fox since 1995, was originally an ABC affiliate. When its affiliation agreement with ABC ended on December 1, 1995, Fox programming moved to the station and it became the third Memphis station to affiliate with the network (WMKW-TV [channel 30, now WLMT] had been the area's original Fox affiliate from the network's October 1986 launch until it moved to WPTY in 1990). The outgoing Fox station, WPTY, became the market's ABC affiliate. After the network switch, channel 13 replaced ABC's soap opera lineup with children's programs from Fox Kids (later 4Kids TV), unlike most of the other stations that switched to Fox between 1994 and 1996.

WHBQ is the only television station in the Memphis market that has never changed its call letters or channel allocation, and the only one to have been an owned-and-operated station of any major network. It was also the smallest Fox O&O by market size (if WOGX in Gainesville, Florida, market #163, is not counted due to its status as a semi-satellite of WOFL in Orlando).

]]> Tennessee – WREG 3 https://webappmagic.com/tennessee-wreg3/ Sun, 06 Oct 2019 00:52:33 +0000 https://webappmagic.com/?page_id=2267

About WREG 3

WREC-TV was the first television station in the Memphis market to broadcast in color, beginning in 1966. It was also the first to broadcast in stereo, starting in 1987. In the 1980s, the station became known for its "Action News" brand of local newscasts, which featured fast-paced music and graphics.

In the mid-1990s, WREC-TV underwent a major overhaul, rebranding as "News Channel 3" and adopting a more traditional news presentation. In 1995, the station switched its primary affiliation from CBS to ABC, becoming the market's ABC affiliate as a result of a group affiliation deal between ABC and Wooten's successor company, Allbritton Communications. The switch made WREG-TV the market's CBS affiliate. In 1998, Allbritton Communications sold WREC-TV to Raycom Media, which still owns the station today.

]]> Tennessee – WVLT 8 https://webappmagic.com/tennessee-wvlt8/ Sun, 06 Oct 2019 00:45:57 +0000 https://webappmagic.com/?page_id=2262

About WVLT 8

WVLT-TV debuted on October 18, 1953 as WTSK-TV on channel 26. It was Tennessee's first UHF station, and the second television station in East Tennessee, signing on just a few hours after WROL-TV in Knoxville (channel 6, now WATE-TV). The station was a CBS affiliate, but also shared ABC programming with WROL-TV.

Channel 26 found the going difficult at first, since television manufacturers weren't required to build in UHF tuning capability at the time. Viewers needed an expensive converter to watch WTSK, and even then the picture quality was marginal at best. In addition, most of East Tennessee is very mountainous, and UHF signals at the time usually did not carry very well over rugged terrain. In 1954, the station's original local owners, Television Services of Knoxville, sold the station to South Central Communications, a radio company in Evansville, Indiana, who changed its calls to WTVK.

When WBIR-TV signed on in 1956 and took the CBS affiliation, WTVK became a full-time ABC affiliate. However, it spent most of the next 20 years as a very distant third in the ratings. While this was due in part to ABC being a much weaker network (it wouldn't be on par with CBS and NBC in terms of programming until the 1970s), another problem was the terrain issue. Many viewers didn't get a clear signal from channel 26 until cable arrived in Knoxville in the 1970s. In fact, many viewers got a better signal from WLOS-TV (channel 13) in Asheville, North Carolina; WLOS' transmitter is located almost 118 miles (190 km) east of Knoxville.

]]> Tennessee – WATE ABC6 https://webappmagic.com/tennessee-wate-abc6/ Sun, 06 Oct 2019 00:40:15 +0000 https://webappmagic.com/?page_id=2257

About WATE ABC6

Channel 6, WROL-TV, was the first television station in East Tennessee, signing on the air at 8 p.m. on October 1, 1953. The race to be the first television station in the eastern part of the state was won by WROL-TV when the 300-foot (91 m) tower of WJHL-TV in Johnson City (which is now a sister station to channel 6) collapsed a few months earlier. Despite this, WROL-TV claimed the title of first station by only 25 days. Its first studios were located underneath the 800-foot (244 m) self-supporting tower on Sharp's Ridge, which was one of the tallest man-made structures in Tennessee at the time. WROL-TV was signed on by Greater East Tennessee TV, Inc., a company owned by local insurance executive Paul Mountcastle and a small group of investors, along with WROL-AM 950. At the time, Mountcastle was chairman of the board of the Life and Casualty Insurance Company of Tennessee of Nashville, which signed on WLAC-TV (now WTVF) in that city in 1954. The stations were not considered to be co-owned.

WROL-TV signed on as a primary NBC affiliate due to the longstanding affiliation of WROL-AM with NBC Radio, and also shared ABC programming with CBS affiliate WSKT-TV (now WVLT-TV). Although NBC held a strong presence on WROL, DuMont tried unsuccessfully on several occasions to get a secondary affiliation with the station when it was not broadcasting NBC and ABC. To fill its non-network schedule, channel 6 opted for local programming, as required by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). DuMont was forced to join WTVK on a secondary basis. CBS also made numerous attempts to secure a primary affiliation.

About WBBJ 7

The station, WDXI-TV, signed on on March 6, 1955 as Jackson, Tennessee's first television station. It operated an analog signal on VHF channel 7 and was a CBS affiliate owned by Aaron Robinson along with WDXI radio (1310 AM). In 1966, Cy Bahakel bought the station and changed the call letters to the current WBBJ-TV in 1967 (as Robinson's estate retained ownership of WDXI radio). Since then, WBBJ has had the longest ownership tenure of any station in Tennessee, surpassing stations in much larger markets within the state.

Soon after Bahakel took over, in January 1967, the station dropped its affiliation with CBS in favor of ABC (which WDXI-TV had carried as a secondary affiliation for some time beforehand). Since then, Jackson has received CBS programming from WREC-TV/WREG-TV in Memphis. Like many of the stations that operated in analog on channel 7, WBBJ has used various versions of the circle 7 logo over the years. Since 2003, the station has used the original, ABC-trademarked version. Jackson residents can also see ABC programming over-the-air in some areas through WATN-TV in Memphis, but this station is not carried on local cable providers.

About WDEF 12

The station, which has always been a primary CBS affiliate, signed on the air on April 25, 1954, carrying programming from all four networks. It was owned by Joe Engel, who also owned the Chattanooga Lookouts minor league baseball team, as well as WDEF radio (AM 1370, now WXCT) and WDEF-FM (92.3 MHz). The station took the CBS affiliation from WROM-TV (now WTVC, channel 9). In 1956, it lost the NBC affiliation to WRGP-TV (now WRCB-TV), and in 1958 it lost the ABC affiliation to WTVC (the former WROM). During the late 1950s, the station was also briefly affiliated with the NTA Film Network.

Throughout its history, the station has consistently been affiliated with CBS, but has also carried programming from other networks at various points in time. Its current focus on CBS programming is a result of its long-standing affiliation with the network and its continued success in the market.
