About KOLR

The station went on the air as KTTS-TV on March 14, 1953, and was formed by the Independent Broadcasting Company, which also owned KTTS radio (1400 AM, now KSGF on AM 1260, and 94.7 FM). Channel 10 began operations in downtown Springfield, at the southwest corner of Walnut and Jefferson Streets, in the Springfield Chamber of Commerce building. Since its inception, the station has been a CBS affiliate; however, it also had a secondary affiliation with ABC, which it shared with major NBC affiliate KYTV (channel 3) until KMTC (channel 27, now KOZL-TV) debuted on in 1968.

In 1971, the station's call signs were changed to KOLR. The station's transmission tower, at 2,000 feet (610 meters), is the second tallest in the United States, only 19.2 meters (63 feet) lower than the highest. In 1972, the radio stations were sold to Great Empire Broadcasting of Wichita, Kansas.

About KY 3

The station debuted on October 1, 1953, becoming the Springfield market's second television station; the first was CBS affiliate KTTS-TV (channel 10, now KOLR), which debuted in March of that year. KYTV, founded by the Cox and Duvall families, was also the first television station established expressly for television production west of the Mississippi River. Channel 3 has been an NBC affiliate from its inception, however it shared a secondary ABC affiliation with KTTS until 1968, when KMTC (channel 27, now MyNetworkTV station KOZL-TV) signed on. On December 26, 1953, KYTV debuted a television broadcast of Ozark Jubilee, a live country music program that originated on radio station KWTO (560 AM); ABC began telecasting the program nationally on January 22, 1955, although it temporarily originated from Columbia until it moved to the Jewell Theatre on April 30, 1955, using KYTV's staff and equipment. The crew and facilities of the station also played important roles in the development of two additional programs that aired on ABC throughout the 1950s, Talent Varieties and The Eddy Arnold Show.

About ABC30

Channel 30 went on the air on June 8, 1969, as the first UHF television station in the St. Louis area in almost a decade. Though the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granted its construction permit in 1966 to a group of local investors under the banner Greater Saint Louis Television Corporation, the station was signed-on under the ownership of Evans Broadcasting, a New York City-based company that acquired the permit in 1968. KDNL-TV first aired business news, religious shows, rejected network series from NBC station KSD-TV (channel 5, now KSDK) and then-ABC outlet KTVI (channel 2), and old movies. By 1976, the station's programming had become more typical of the era's independent stations, with cartoons, westerns, sitcoms, religious shows in the early mornings, and movies in primetime and late nights. In 1976, KDNL began broadcasting St. Louis Blues hockey games, which lasted five seasons.

About KPLR 11

On April 28, 1959, the station went on the air as Missouri's first independent station. The call letters of the station were obtained from the name of its founder, St. Louis real estate tycoon and hotelier Harold Koplar. Despite losing his bid to establish the station from the ground up, Koplar obtained the station's license in 1958 under dubious circumstances.

About FOX2 NOW

On August 10, 1953, Signal Hill Telecasting Corporation signed on the air as WTVI, transmitting on UHF channel 54. On February 8, 1947, it was licensed to Belleville, Illinois (across the Mississippi River from St. Louis) and became the second television station in the St. Louis market after KSDK. Buddy Blattner, Bill Durney, and Milo Hamilton announced the inaugural broadcast, a baseball game between the St. Louis Browns and the Cincinnati Reds. It was primarily a CBS affiliate with minor connections with ABC and DuMont. In February 1953, an agreement was reached to replace KSD-TV with a DuMont affiliate. The station was supposed to go on the air on May 15, 1953. The station began broadcasting from studios in Alton, Illinois. When KWK-TV (channel 4, now KMOV) opened on July 8, 1954, the CBS affiliation was transferred to it; WTVI became the major ABC station by default.

About KQ 2

On September 27, 1953, KFEQ-TV went on the air for the first time. Local businessman Barton Pitts, owner of local radio station KFEQ 680 AM, launched it. KFEQ-TV began as a major CBS affiliate while also carrying programming from the DuMont Television Network. A 750-foot (229-meter) tall lattice steel tower was built that year to house the station's transmitter. The St. Joseph tower, which has become a landmark in the community, is sometimes likened to the 1,042-foot (318-meter) tower used by KCTV (channel 5) in Kansas City. Both stations, which went on the air on the same day, erected their towers at the same time. In preparation for the digital television changeover, the KQTV tower was partially shortened to 587 feet on January 19, 2009. (179 m).

About KTVO 3

On April 14, 1952, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ended the "Freeze of '48," a countrywide stop to restructure TV airwaves. VHF channel 3 was allotted to the Kirksville, Missouri area. North Missouri Broadcasting Partners, a company led by former U.S. Congressman Sam "Wat" Arnold and Sam Burk, owners of Kirksville radio station KIRX, had previously been considering the possibilities of adding a television station to their operations, were drawn to this prime channel. In order to offset the expenses and risks of the new endeavor, the Kirksville group joined forces with another led by James J. Conroy, owner of KBIZ in Ottumwa, Iowa, in early 1953. In exchange for KBIZ stock, the Kirksville group agreed to build a tower and transmitter location whose signal would encompass both Kirksville and Ottumwa. A 1,100-foot (340-meter) tower was erected in Downing, Missouri, after receiving FCC clearance.

About WDAF FOX4

On January 30, 1948, The Kansas City Star Co., the locally based parent company of the Kansas City Star, which operated as an employee-owned entity at the time, applied to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for a construction permit and license to operate a television station on VHF channel 4. On the same day, the FCC awarded the Star Co. a license for the projected television station; the business then sought to use WDAF-TV (standing for "Why Dial Any Further?") as its call letters, instead of the base call sign initially allocated to its radio station on 610 AM. (now KCSP; on radio, the WDAF calls are now heard on 106.5 FM, following a format shift in September 2003 that also saw the former's country music format migrate from the AM station, which adopted a sports talk format). (Channel 4 is one of a few U.S. broadcast stations that is an exception to an FCC regulation that assigns call letters beginning with a "K" to television and radio stations with license cities west of the Mississippi River and call letters beginning with a "W" to stations east of the river. The WDAF television and radio stations have an oddity since Kansas City was initially positioned east of the original "K"/"W" border distinction designated by the FCC when the WDAF call letters were issued to both stations.)

About WGEM

The license for WGEM-TV was initially issued to Quincy Broadcasting Co., which was controlled by the Quincy Herald-Whig; it was assigned channel 10. From the beginning, the station was connected with NBC and ABC and was represented by Walker Representation Co. T. C. Oakley was Quincy Broadcasting's president at the time, and Joe Bonansinga was the station's first general manager. On July 27, 1953, the station acquired their DuMont transmitters on the same truck as neighbouring KHQA-TV (channel 7). The crews fought to see who could fly first. On September 4, 1953, WGEM began an interim transmission of two hours every night.
