About KXLT FOX 47

Shockley relaunched the station as a Fox affiliate on January 19, 1998. Previously, cable systems in Minnesota broadcast WFTC (and before that, KMSP) from the Twin Cities, while those in Iowa aired KDSM-TV from Des Moines. Shockley immediately invested in the station, bringing it up to full power and relocating to new studios in November of that year. KXLT launched a cable-only affiliate of the network on November 1, 1998, in collaboration with The WB. The station, known as "KWBR," was programmed by the national The WB 100+ service, while local promotion and advertising sales were handled by KXLT.

Quincy Newspapers, owner of KTTC, purchased Shockley Communications in 2001. Quincy, however, was unable to acquire KXLT because to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) laws controlling duopolies. The FCC prohibits a single business from owning two of the four highest-rated stations. Furthermore, Rochester/Austin/Mason City has just six full-power stations, which is insufficient to legally allow a duopoly in any scenario. Nonetheless, under a shared services agreement, Quincy took over KXLT's operations. Quincy provides all technical support, marketing, commercial production, and master control for KXLT as part of the agreement. In 2005, Shockley sold the station to current owner SagamoreHill Broadcasting.

About KTTC

What is it now? On September 21, 1998, KTTC formed a collaboration with The WB 100+, a nationwide programming service owned by The WB for television markets ranked more than 100, and cable companies in the Rochester region to launch KTTC-DT2. Prior to 1998, Rochester could watch WGN-national TV's feed or local WB station KMWB (now WUCW) in Minneapolis-Saint Paul. It was a cable-only station, thus it used the call letters "KWBR" (for "The WB Rochester") in a fictitious way for identification. KTTC provides local advertising possibilities as well as promotional services for the station.

On January 24, 2006, CBS Corporation (which separated from Viacom in 2005) and Warner Bros. Television (the firm that controlled The WB) announced that they will quit operating the UPN and WB networks and merge their resources to form The CW. The letters would reflect the first initials of the respective corporate parents of the new network.

On September 18, same year, The CW went national, and KTTC introduced a new second digital subchannel to simulcast "KWBR" and provide non-cable subscribers with access to the new network. With its over-the-air debut, "KWBR" adopted the call letters KTTC-DT2 and joined The CW Plus, the successor of The WB 100+.

About KAAL ABC6

The station went on the air as KMMT on August 17, 1953, and broadcast an analog signal on VHF channel 6. Local merchants Martin Busted, Harry Smith, and Palmer Ulland, who also owned KAUS radio, were its founding owners (AM 1480 and FM 99.9). The station was formerly a major CBS affiliate with secondary ABC and DuMont affiliations. Following the establishment of KGLO-TV (channel 3, now KIMT) from Mason City in late 1954, KMMT changed its principal allegiance to ABC. DuMont was subsequently eliminated once the network went out of business in 1956. This station is the Upper Midwest's longest-running ABC affiliate.

The station was also temporarily linked with the NTA Film Network in the late 1950s. It shared studios with KAUS radio on MN 105 in Austin, where both stations are still broadcasting today. The Family Hour, hosted by Christian Pastor Joe Matt, was one of the few local programs produced by the television station. The programme aired until April 2001 and was one of the country's longest-running, domestically produced religious broadcasts.

]]> Minnesota – KIMT 3 https://webappmagic.com/minnesota-kimt3/ Tue, 03 Sep 2019 22:44:01 +0000 https://webappmagic.com/?page_id=1251

About KIMT 3

The station debuted on May 15, 1954, as KGLO-TV, owned by Lee Enterprises, together with the GLObe Gazette and KGLO radio (AM 1300 and FM 101.1). On the first day of operation, reception of the station's analog signal on VHF channel 3 was reported as far away as Gary, Indiana. The maximum effective radiated power allowed on the historic allocation was 100,000 watts at the time. It was linked with CBS due to the long association of its radio sister with CBS Radio, but it also had a secondary relationship with DuMont until 1956, when the latter discontinued operations.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) determined in August 1977 that one firm could not possess all of the media channels in a community, forcing Lee Enterprises to split up its Mason City cluster. As a result, in 1977, KGLO-AM was sold to BY Communications, and the television station was renamed KIMT (Iowa/Minnesota Television). It was purchased by the Shott family of Bluefield, West Virginia, and their Daily Telegraph Printing Company in 1980. They did, however, sell KIMT and WBTW in Florence, South Carolina to Spartan Radiocasting Company in 1984. (later to become Spartan Communications).

]]> Minnesota – KEYC https://webappmagic.com/minnesota-keyc/ Tue, 03 Sep 2019 22:34:51 +0000 https://webappmagic.com/?page_id=1246

About KEYC

KEYC-TV debuted on October 5, 1960, just in time for NBC to broadcast the first game of the World Series that evening. Lee Enterprises owned it, as did the neighbouring KGLO-TV (now KIMT) in Mason City, Iowa. Less than a year later, KEYC changed its allegiance to CBS, which it has kept to this day. Due to FCC ownership constraints, Lee Enterprises was obliged to sell KEYC to United Communications in 1977 in order to buy KOIN-TV in Portland, Oregon. During UPN's run, the station transmitted part of the network's programs on a secondary channel.

KEYC benefited greatly from an exemption to the FCC's "212 + 1" strategy for distributing VHF television capacity. There were twelve VHF channels and 69 UHF channels accessible in the early days of broadcast television (which was later reduced to 56 with the removal of high-band channels 70-83 in the early 1980s). The VHF bands were more attractive since transmissions broadcast on them went further. Because there were only twelve VHF channels available, the stations could not be placed too close together. The FCC's Sixth Report and Order, issued in 1952, described a new distribution table for VHF licenses and opened up the UHF spectrum. Almost the whole United States would be able to get two commercial VHF channels plus one non-commercial allocation as a result of these activities. A third VHF channel would be available to the majority of the rest of the country ("1/2"). Other parts of the nation would be categorized as "UHF islands," since they were too close to major cities to get VHF coverage.

]]> Minnesota – WDIO https://webappmagic.com/minnesota-wdio/ Tue, 03 Sep 2019 22:26:12 +0000 https://webappmagic.com/?page_id=1240

About WDIO

WDIO-TV debuted on the air on January 24, 1966, and has been broadcasting in color since since. It quickly joined ABC, which had previously been restricted to after-hours clearances on CBS station KDAL-TV (channel 3, now KDLH) and NBC affiliate WDSM-TV (channel 6, now KBJR-TV). Frank Befera, a qualified engineer who owned a network of radio stations in northern Minnesota, owned it. WIRT first broadcast on August 31, 1967. In 1977, Befera sold channels 10 and 13 to Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, but remained president and general manager. In 1986, HBJ sold the stations to Hubbard Broadcasting, and Befera retired the following year.

From the 1980s until 2019, the station had a long-running logo before switching to a callsign-only logo. The typography of the logo (which incorporates a number "10" into the word "IO") goes back to the early 1970s. Changes to the 10/13 logo were only dependent on changes to ABC's logo and branding rules until 2019.

A snowstorm blew in the Northland on April 11, 2008. This triggered power outages in Duluth, which led WDIO, KDLH, and KBJR to lose service at times.

MeTV replaced RTV on 10.2 and 13.2 on November 28, 2011. WDIO/WIRT introduced Ion Television programs to their third subchannels at the end of September 2017, and all three signals now operate in 720p high definition.

]]> Minnesota – KBJR 6 https://webappmagic.com/minnesota-kbjr6/ Tue, 03 Sep 2019 22:20:41 +0000 https://webappmagic.com/?page_id=1234

About KBJR TV

The station debuted as WDSM-TV on March 1, 1954, and was associated with CBS. Ridder Newspapers, which also controlled the Duluth Herald (now part of the Duluth News Tribune), also owned WDSM-AM 710. WDSM was Duluth's first VHF television station, broadcasting days before KDAL-TV (now KDLH). The station changed affiliations with KDAL in October 1955 and became an NBC affiliate. In November 1965, it launched local color broadcasts. It also carried select ABC shows, sharing them with KDAL until 1966, when WDIO-TV signed on.

In 1974, Ridder combined with Knight Newspapers to establish Knight Ridder. The amalgamated firm, however, was not permitted to preserve the WDSM stations. It was grandfathered under FCC regulations prohibiting common ownership of newspapers and television enterprises. The FCC saw the Knight-Ridder merger as a change in ownership, and as a result, the WDSM stations lost their grandfathered status. In the fall of that year, the television station was sold to RJR Communications, a locally based company. The call letters were changed to the present "KBJR-TV" on December 6. Channel 6 is one of the few stations in the country whose call letters begin with "K," despite being licensed to a city east of the Mississippi River. However, its headquarters have traditionally been in Duluth.

About FOX9 Minneapolis

WFTC, virtual channel 9.2 (UHF digital channel 29), is a MyNetworkTV-owned and operated television station covering the Twin Cities television market in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The station is owned by Fox Television Stations, a Fox Corporation subsidiary, as part of a duopoly alongside Fox-owned and operated station KMSP-TV (channel 9). The two stations share studios and a transmission tower on Viking Drive in Eden Prairie.

WFTC rebroadcasts its signal on full-power satellite station KFTC (virtual and UHF digital channel 26) in Bemidji (with transmitter near Lake Bemidji State Park) and several low-power repeaters throughout Minnesota, including the Mankato market (via K23MF-D in nearby St. James via the local municipal-operated Cooperative TV (CTV) network of translators), as that area lacks its own MyNetworkTV affiliate.

]]> Minnesota – WCCO TV https://webappmagic.com/minnesota-wccotv/ Tue, 03 Sep 2019 22:01:15 +0000 https://webappmagic.com/?page_id=1222

About WCCO TV

The origins of WCCO-TV may be traced back to a radio station, although not the one with which it is currently connected. The ancestry of WCCO-TV may be traced back to radio station WRHM, which first broadcast in 1925. In 1934, the Minneapolis Tribune and the Saint Paul Pioneer Press-Dispatch created a joint company called "Twin Cities Newspapers," which bought the radio station and renamed it WTCN. Twin Cities Newspapers later expanded into the fledgling FM band with WTCN-FM, and then into the then-new medium of television with the July 1, 1949 launch of WTCN-TV, becoming Minnesota's second television station, broadcasting from the Radio City Theater at 50 South 9th Street in downtown Minneapolis. In 1949, Robert Ridder was named president of WCCO-TV. Since its inception, Channel 4 has been a key CBS affiliate. It did, however, have a secondary affiliation with ABC from 1949 to 1953, until a new station with the WTCN-TV calls (now known as KARE-TV) picked up the ABC affiliation and kept it from its 1953 sign on until 1961, when it became an independent station; it has been associated with NBC since 1979.

Twin Cities Newspapers divested its broadcast interests in 1952, with channel 4 going to the Murphy and McNally families, who had previously purchased WCCO (830 AM) from CBS. Midwest Radio and Television was formed from the merger of the stations, with CBS as a minority partner. On August 17, station 4's call signs were changed to WCCO-TV to match its new radio sibling (the WTCN-TV call sign appeared again in the market the following year on the new channel 11). To comply with Federal Communications Commission ownership limitations at the time, CBS was obliged to sell its minority holding in the WCCO stations in 1954.
