About WWTV

WWTV began broadcasting on January 1, 1954. Sparton Corporation, a Jackson radio manufacturer, controlled the station on channel 13. It was Michigan's first television station north of Lansing, arriving many months before Traverse City's WPBN-TV (channel 7). WWTV has been a CBS affiliate from its inception, but it has had secondary connections with ABC and DuMont (the latter shut down in 1956). WWTV carried ABC programming with WPBN until 1971, when WGTU (channel 29) signed on and became the area's ABC affiliate. On weekdays, WWTV showed select ABC soap operas and game programs, while on weekends, WPBN carried ABC sports programming.

About WPBN UpNorthLive

On February 13, 1954, WPBN-TV began transmitting an analog signal on VHF channel 7. The Biederman family and their firm, Midwest Broadcasting, owned it, along with WTCM-AM 1400. (now 580). Les Biederman, the company's president, had signed on with WTCM, Northern Michigan's oldest radio station, in 1940. Over the next decade, he purchased or signed on to many more AM stations in the region. The network was dubbed the "Paul Bunyan Network," with WTCM serving as the flagship station. Because channel 7 covers much of the region served by radio stations, Biederman opted to call his new station WPBN-TV rather than WTCM-TV (for Traverse City, Michigan) (for Paul Bunyan Network).

]]> Michigan – WLUC 6 https://webappmagic.com/michigan-wluc6/ Thu, 05 Sep 2019 03:28:13 +0000 https://webappmagic.com/?page_id=1754

About WLUC 6

Channel 6 became WDMJ-TV, the Upper Peninsula's first television station, on April 28, 1956. The station broadcast programs from all three networks available at the time, but it was mostly a CBS affiliate. The Daily Mining Journal owned both WDMJ and WDMJ radio (1320 AM). Its headquarters were located on the top floor of the Mining Journal building on Washington Street in downtown Marquette. The station's facilities were rapidly outgrown. The station relocated to its new studios in Negaunee Township in 1959. In 1964, it was sold to Post Corporation, proprietors of WLUK-TV in Green Bay, Wisconsin, who changed the calls to WLUC-TV to match its moniker at the time "Lucky 6". In 1963, WLUC began transmitting network programs in color, and in 1969, with the purchase of color video tape technology, it began showing all locally produced programming in color. In 1980, the station relocated its transmitter to the southeast of Republic and decommissioned the previous one near its new studios in Negaunee.

]]> Michigan – WLNS 6 https://webappmagic.com/michigan-wlns6/ Thu, 05 Sep 2019 03:23:57 +0000 https://webappmagic.com/?page_id=1749

About WLNS 6

On October 13, 1990, WLAJ began broadcasting from a repurposed appliance store. Joel Ferguson, the founder of the market's first independent station, WFSL-TV, initially owned the station (now Fox affiliate WSYM-TV). Ferguson had founded WLAJ with the profits from the sale of WFSL.

Lansing was one of the largest markets in the United States without a full-time ABC affiliate prior to its sign-on in 1990, despite being large enough to support three full network affiliates since at least the 1960s. However, the city received just two VHF licenses: channels 6 and 10, which are occupied by CBS station WLNS and NBC affiliate WILX-TV, respectively. Even after the FCC enforced all-channel tuning in 1964, UHF was not considered practical. Lansing is physically located between Detroit to the east, Flint/Saginaw/Bay City to the north, Toledo to the south, and Grand Rapids/Kalamazoo/Battle Creek to the west. As a result, it was unlikely that a third VHF licensee could have been added. Cable and satellite have developed sufficient penetration in Mid-Michigan by the 1980s to make a UHF "Big Three" affiliate possible.

]]> Michigan – WILX TV https://webappmagic.com/michigan-wilxtv/ Thu, 05 Sep 2019 03:18:28 +0000 https://webappmagic.com/?page_id=1744

About WILX TV

The station debuted on March 15, 1959, and was owned by Jackson Telecasters, who also operated WJCO radio (AM 1510, now WJKN). Lansing Broadcasting controlled part of Jackson Telecasters, as well as WILS-AM 1320, from which channel 10 received calls.

WILX shared the analog VHF channel 10 frequency with WMSB, a Michigan State University instructional station. WKAR-TV was the initial station, airing on UHF channel 60. It had trouble attracting viewers, however, because television sets were not required to include UHF tuning until 1964. Viewers had to acquire a pricey converter to view WKAR, and even with one, the picture was blurry. MSU decided to share channel 10 with WILX in order to enhance its audience. As a result, WMSB was based on MSU's East Lansing campus, but WILX was licensed to Onondaga and had studios in Jackson, the market's second biggest city. In Onondaga, though, both stations shared the same tower and transmitter.

WILX broadcasted for 70% of the broadcast day, including all of prime time. If there was breaking news, a sporting event, or a special on NBC during WMSB's time, the station would frequently surrender its time to WILX. This arrangement was maintained until 1972, when WKAR switched to UHF channel 23.

About WXMI FOX17

On March 18, 1982, the station went on the air as an independent station with the call letters WWMA. "We're West Michigan Alternative," according to the call letters. Heritage Broadcasting Company was the station's initial owner. On August 15, 1983, almost a year after coming on, new stockholders purchased control of the station and changed the call letters to the present WXMI. The "XMI" was claimed to represent for "EXtreme Michigan" at the time. WXMI secured an affiliation agreement with Fox in 1987 and became the market's Fox affiliate on April 9, 1987, when Fox extended its programming offerings to include primetime programming. Odyssey Television Partners, a New York-based business run by Robert Dudley, bought the station's shares in 1989.

WXMI was bought by Indianapolis-based Emmis Communications nine years later, and the station, along with sister station KTZZ in Seattle, Washington, was transferred to Tribune Broadcasting in 1998 in exchange for FM station WQCD in New York City. Following a dispute between Fox and the block's lessee, 4Kids Entertainment, cartoons were dropped from WXMI's schedule in 2008; the Saturday morning time period is now split between the weekend edition of WXMI's morning newscast and children's programming (either syndicated or from Fox's Xploration Station block), fulfilling the Federal Communications Commission (FCCE/I )'s guidelines.

]]> Michigan – WZZM 13 https://webappmagic.com/michigan-wzzm13/ Thu, 05 Sep 2019 03:08:39 +0000 https://webappmagic.com/?page_id=1734

About WZZM 13

In 1961, the West Michigan Telecasters got a building permission to operate a television station on VHF channel 9. However, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) altered the channel locations in the area later that year, resulting in the VHF channel 13 allotment shifting from Cadillac to Grand Rapids. As a result of the case, WWTV in Cadillac, which was formerly broadcast on channel 13, was forced to relocate to channel 9.

WZZM-TV went on the air on November 1, 1962, at 6:30 p.m. After a tube on its transmitter failed, the station fell off the air barely 20 minutes later; it returned to the air 10 minutes later. The opening show was hosted by news director Jack Hogan. WZZM had humble beginnings, broadcasting from a banquet room turned studio at the Pantlind Hotel (now the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel). Live programs included This Morning with Bud Lindeman, Shirley's Show, and a nightly news program, but The Bozo Show, which aired for more than 30 years, was the station's most renowned show. Bill Merchant was the original Bozo, with Dick Richards as "The Ringmaster"; Richards eventually took over as Bozo.

WZZM was now short-spaced to WSPD-TV (now WTVG) in Toledo, Ohio as a result of the exchange with WWTV. To protect WSPD-TV from interference, it had to install its transmitter roughly 40 miles farther north than the other stations in West Michigan and reroute its signal. As a result, WZZM's signal only just made it to Kalamazoo and narrowly missed Battle Creek. Until WUHQ-TV (channel 41, now WOTV) signed on from Battle Creek in 1971, viewers in Southwestern Michigan had to rely on WSJV in Elkhart, Indiana, WXYZ-TV in Detroit, or WLS-TV in Chicago for ABC programming. WZZM-TV signed on a satellite station in Kalamazoo, broadcasting on VHF channel 12, sometime in late 1964.

]]> Michigan – WOOD TV8 https://webappmagic.com/michigan-woodtv8/ Thu, 05 Sep 2019 03:04:24 +0000 https://webappmagic.com/?page_id=1728

About WOOD TV8

The station went on the air as WLAV-TV on August 15, 1949, first airing on VHF channel 7; it was Michigan's fourth television station and the first situated outside of Detroit. The station was founded by Grand Rapids industrialist Leonard Adrian Versluis, who also founded Grand Rapids' second radio station, WLAV, in 1940. (1340 AM, now WJRW). Versluis sold the television station for $1.37 million to Grandwood Broadcasting in 1951. The Bitner Group subsidiary also owned WOOD, Grand Rapids' first radio station.

Grandwood first sought for a television license in 1948, but the application just missed the Federal Communications Commission's block on new television building licenses. In reality, the WLAV-TV application was one of the final building permits given before the suspension. Grandwood ultimately got weary of waiting and agreed to acquire the station from Versluis. WLAV changed its call letters to WOOD-TV to mirror its radio sibling and began broadcasting from a new transmitter in northern Grand Rapids on October 19.

About WSMH 66

WKZO-TV first went on the air on June 1, 1950. (the call letters standing for "KalamaZoO"). It was owned by broadcasting pioneer John Fetzer, who also controlled WKZO radio, and was West Michigan's second television station to premiere after WLAV-TV (channel 7, now WOOD-TV channel 8). It broadcast shows from all four networks at the time: CBS, NBC, ABC, and DuMont. However, due to its radio sister's long-standing association with the CBS Radio Network, it has always been a key CBS affiliate.

About WSMH 66

Flint Broadcasting Limited Partnership sought the call letters WSMH, which were given to them on September 27, 1984. On January 13, 1985, WSMH debuted as an independent station with Frederick (Fritz) Mills as general manager. Mills was previously the director of national sales for UPI Media in Chicago. In April 1985, a fire at the transmitter prompted the station to go off the air for almost a month while repairs were conducted. By July 1986, Flint Broadcasting had sold the station to Gerald J. Robinson. It became a charter Fox affiliate on October 9, 1986. The station was purchased by Sinclair Broadcast Group in 1996. WSMH was the Mid-Michigan affiliate of the now-defunct syndication package The Disney Afternoon from 1990 to 1997. It also aired the now-defunct Sinclair-owned children's programming block KidsClick seven days a week from July 1, 2017 until March 31, 2019.
