About KARK 4

KARK is a television station located in Little Rock, Arkansas that first signed on the air on April 15, 1954. It is the city's second-oldest continuously operating television station, after KATV (channel 7), which began broadcasting almost five months earlier. When it first launched, KARK operated from studios located on Spring Street in Little Rock.

In 1966, the Barton family sold KARK to Mullins Broadcasting, the owner of KBTV (now KUSA) in Denver. After the company's owner, John C. Mullins, died in 1969, the Mullins estate sold both KBTV and KARK to Combined Communications in 1972. In 1976, the station moved to a new facility on West 3rd Street in downtown Little Rock. Seven years later, in 1979, Combined's television station properties, including KARK, were acquired by the Gannett Company in what was then the largest media merger in United States history. In 1983, Gannett sold KARK to Southwest Media, a subsidiary of United Broadcasting, a company that also owned KDBC-TV in El Paso, Texas, WTOK-TV in Meridian, Mississippi, and WMUR-TV in Manchester, New Hampshire. Gannett would re-enter the Little Rock-Pine Bluff market in December 1994 when it acquired rival CBS affiliate KTHV (channel 11) from the Arkansas Television Company.

About KFSM 5

KFSM is a television station located in Fort Smith, Arkansas that signed on for the first time on July 9, 1953 as KFSA-TV on channel 22. It is one of the oldest television stations in the state. KFSA-TV was owned by American Television Company, Inc., which was run by Donald W. Reynolds, who also owned Fort Smith's two major newspapers – the Southwest American and Times Record (later merged as the Southwest Times Record) – and KFSA-AM 950. The station's studios and transmitter were located in the Times Record/Southwest American building at 920 Rogers Avenue in downtown Fort Smith.

The first broadcast on KFSA-TV was hosted by KFSA radio personality Pat Porta. The station carried programming from all four networks of the time – NBC, CBS, ABC, and DuMont – but it was primarily affiliated with NBC. It is not clear how the station's programming and content may have differed from that of other stations in the area at the time.

About KATV

KATV is a television station located in Little Rock, Arkansas that first signed on the air on December 19, 1953. When it first began broadcasting, KATV was licensed to Pine Bluff and was affiliated with both CBS and ABC. It became a full ABC affiliate in 1955 after KTHV (channel 11) signed on and took the CBS affiliation due to KTHS (now KAAY) having a longstanding relationship with CBS Radio. During the late 1950s, KATV was also briefly affiliated with the NTA Film Network.

KATV was founded by John Toole "J.T." Griffin and James C. "Jimmy" Leake, who also founded sister stations KTUL in Tulsa and KWTV in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The company founded by Griffin would later become Griffin Communications. It is not clear what the relationship was between KATV and these sister stations in terms of programming and content.

About KAIT 8

KAIT is a television station located in Jonesboro, Arkansas that first signed on the air on July 15, 1963 as an independent station. It was a venture of Fort Smith businessman George Hernreich, and has been affiliated with ABC since 1965.

The Jonesboro market is unique in that it can only receive one VHF commercial channel, due to its location between several other markets that each have multiple VHF channels. Most other television markets in the country are able to receive at least two VHF channels. As a result, KAIT was the only television station serving Jonesboro until KTEJ signed on in May 1976.

KAIT has changed hands several times over the years. It was sold by the Hernreich family to Channel Communications in 1984, and then to Cosmos Broadcasting, the broadcasting arm of South Carolina-based insurer Liberty Corporation, in 1986. Liberty Corporation exited the insurance business in 2000, bringing the Cosmos stations directly under the Liberty banner. In 2005, previous owner Raycom Media acquired KAIT through its purchase of Liberty.

For many years, KAIT also operated a low-powered translator station, K11JW, which broadcast on Channel 11 in nearby Blytheville, Arkansas. It is not clear if this station is still in operation.

]]> Arkansas – KNWA FOX24 https://webappmagic.com/arkansas-knwa-fox24/ Tue, 03 Sep 2019 23:35:06 +0000 https://webappmagic.com/?page_id=1291

About KNWA

KNWA-TV is a television station located in Fayetteville, Arkansas that began broadcasting on October 1, 1989 as KFAA-TV, a satellite of KPOM-TV in Fort Smith. Both stations were owned by Griffin Television, based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The sign-on of KFAA-TV marked the first time that NBC programming was available over-the-air in much of the northern part of the market since KFSM-TV (channel 5) lost its NBC affiliation to KPOM in 1983. KPOM only provided Grade B coverage of Fayetteville and could not be seen at all in Rogers and points north.

In the early 2000s, KPOM and KFAA started a regional local newscast called Arkansas NBC News targeting the Fort Smith and Fayetteville areas. The newscast was anchored by Don Elkins, Rhonda Justice, and Donna Bragg, with weather by Steve Gibbs and Rick Katzfey, and sports with Mike Nail. Many of the anchors and reporters for Arkansas NBC News were previously with rival station KHBS (channel 40). Despite their efforts, the newscast was unable to gain a foothold in the market and in 2004, Griffin Television sold KPOM-TV and KFAA-TV to Nexstar. The stations changed their callsigns to KNWA-TV and KFTA-TV, respectively, on August 13, 2004, and KNWA became the main station. At the same time, the two stations' operations were merged in a new studio located in the historic Campbell-Bell building on South Block Avenue in downtown Fayetteville. KFTA's original studio on Kelley Highway in Fort Smith continued to be used as KNWA's Arkansas River Valley bureau.
